Pre Production Unit - Producer Research: Marc Platt

I felt it would be really interesting to research someone who is solely a producer to see their background, how they got into it and what they do. I decided to have a look at Marc Platt as he has done a lot of work producing an extensive amount of work from 1987 to recent day.

Marc was born in 1957 in Maryland, America. After graduating from University Of Pennsylvania, he decided to study Law at the New York University and started his career in Media Law. From here is where he changed from a law attorney to producing, working firstly on theatre productions. He started his first play called total abandon in 1983 which was a one date performance of April 28th. After this he decided he wanted to give theatre a break and work on film called Campus man, an American comedy. This was the first time he had worked as a producer on a production in the film industry and unfortunatly the film was not very successful leaving Marc to take a break from the industry for a few years. In 1999, with Marcs history as a Lawyer and a Producer, he was approched and asked if he wanted to produce a new film tittled Legally Blonde. This film, based on a book by Amanda brown, is a comedy about a girl who tries to win back her ex boyfriend proving how clever she is by gaining a Law degree.  Enjoying the role previously, he decided to take the film on and when it was released in 2001, the film was a box office hit accumulating in total $141.8 millon and gaining positive praise from critics.

From here, Marcs career as a producer grew rapidly in both film and theater. He became president of Orion Pictures Production Company and also TriStar Pictures before eventually becoming president of Universal Studios. In 2003, the sequel to the film was released that Platt also produced as well as a play that would be a huge hit still to this day, Wicked. This play, based on a side story of the witches from The Wizard Of Oz gained several awards and is now placed as the 2nd highest grossing show behind The Lion King supassing the $1billion revenue takings. It is now shown in over 25 countries accross the globe.

After the success that Marc had breaking both the theater and film industry as a producer, his career exploded and is high in demand to this day. He set up his own production company and started producing some of his best known work such as Drive (2011), Bridge Of Spies (2015), La La Land (2016) and The Girl On The Train (2016). He is currently working on the live action disney remakes that will be coming out over the next few years including Aladdin, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid and Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.

I have decided to look into Marcs role as a producer ' as I feel this could give me a lot of inspiration to my own production. I first of all came across a video interview with Marc platt who talks about the film. He starts of by explaining how he started producing the film before the book was a success and talks about his efforts of staying true to the original material but he made big changes and for that he wanted to make sure that the author was happy with all the changes he made. He then goes on to explain how it was important with casting. He says that Emily Blunt the lead actress for the film was someone who he felt really comfortble with and had seen her previous work. He then talks about his reasons for casting her in terms of who she is as a person and what that would bring to the character. This is interesting to me that he has really thought about his casting and I will take this on board with making sure I cast the right person for my production. You can see the interview below:

I came across another video where Marc talks about the hit film La La Land that he produced. In this he mainly talks about the director that he worked with called Damien Chazelle and how the film started. He explains that Damien had such passion and drive but the main thing he possed was the love of cinema and the enjoyment of making films. He said as a role as a producer it was really important for him to protect his vision and ensure he was going to make sure although the film would change in places, he was still going to make the film that he had writen keeping its integrity. You can see this below:

Overall I have learnt a lot from researching Marc Platt. Its great to see how much he has accomplished as a producer and hearing him in intereviews has given me an insight of what to look out for. I realise that casting is important with what the actor can bring to the role as well as having a good relationship with them. He also speaks about keeping true to a dirctors vision and original work if adapted. Since im a producer and director I need to make sure that although I will be constraining myself in some areas I must listen to the director side of me to ensure the film is staying true to that thought.
